CGCC Summer Percussion Workshop

Course of Study: The CGCC Summer Percussion Workshop is designed to promote percussion participation and instruct students in the areas of percussion ensemble and solo percussion performance. This workshop is open to high school percussion students, including those entering high school in the fall and 2020 high school graduates. Students will spend time in ensemble rehearsal as well as in topical- and solo performance-based masterclasses. The final evening (Thursday) of the workshop will feature a Solo & Ensemble Percussion Recital. The ensemble selections that have been rehearsed throughout the week will be featured, along with selected outstanding solo selections prepared in advance by the workshop participants (optional).

Tócalo Tucson Summer Chamber Percussion Seminar
When: June 6–13, 2020
Where: Fred Fox School of Music, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ
Course of Study: Tócalo Tucson is a week-long chamber percussion seminar held at the Fred Fox School of Music at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Our 2020 guest faculty include Russell Hartenberger (Nexus, Steve Reich Ensemble) and the Quey Duo (Gene Koshinski and Tim Broscious). Over the course of eight days, program participants work closely with faculty in small chamber settings preparing notable works for performance on two dedicated concerts in Crowder Concert Hall, Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13, 2020. These concerts are free and open to the public. The daily schedule will include two to three different rehearsal blocks, clinics, and masterclasses presented by our guest artists. Over the course of the week, private lessons will also be provided to participants, and optional group hikes and visits to local Tucson landmarks will also occur.

New Orleans Traditional Jazz Camp

Course of Study: Participants will enjoy ensembles, sectionals, and a private lesson, evening jam sessions at the hotel, sit-ins at local jazz clubs, playing at the legendary Preservation Hall, marching and playing in an authentic New Orleans Second Line through the French Quarter, and playing in a final concert in the Bourbon Orleans Ballroom. Also available is an extra day to play in a continuous jam session at a local venue on June 27, 2020 (time and venue to be announced).

Northland Timpani Summit

Course of Study: Are you a timpanist aspiring to hone your approach to excerpts, audition-taking, and refining your sound? If so, the Northland Timpani Summit, a five-day intensive seminar, is for you. Housed in MacPhail’s beautiful recital hall with the instructor’s personal Adams Dresden Classics and a wide selection of custom timpani mallets available to try, participants will dig deep into all aspects of professional timpani and auditioning, including sessions on: Timpani Fundamentals and Technique, Developing and Refining Your Sound, Timpani Head Mounting and Clearing, Deliberate Practice, Audition Preparation and Strategy, Peak Performance Psychology, and much more. Dean Borghesani of the Milwaukee Symphony and Erich Rippel, new Principal Timpanist of the Minnesota Orchestra, are scheduled to give clinics as well. Attendees will also be encouraged to perform excerpts from the core timpani repertoire for the group in a masterclass format, and we’re including an evening dinner/hang with area pros and expert auditioners. The Deliberate Practice Bootcamp is included in the cost of registration, and participants are highly encouraged to attend these sessions; subsequent topics in the Northland Timpani Summit will assume that attendees have experienced the Bootcamp.

The Strike Institute

Course of Study: The Strike Institute is an educational forum that provides middle and high school percussion students the opportunity to learn, share, and experience music through the medium of ensemble performance. Participants receive guidance and instruction from a diverse staff made up of the Midwest's finest educators and performers. Founded in 2009, the Strike Institute is hosted on the campus of Clayton High School in Clayton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Instructors and guest artists at the Strike Institute comprise a who's who of the most significant professionals throughout the Midwest. In addition to group classes in techniques and ensemble performance, students are also eligible for a number of honors including the prestigious Rick Holmes, John Kasica, and Thomas Stubbs Strike Institute Awards, the "Fastest Hands" Award, and numerous World Percussion Awards. The Strike Institute offers opportunities primarily during the summer through week-long camp experiences culminating in a final performance and awards ceremony.

NYU Broadway Percussion Seminar

Course of Study: Hosted by the NYU Steinhardt Percussion Studies Program, the Broadway Percussion Seminar offers classes with special guest percussionists, contractors, and conductors from the world of Broadway. There will be sessions presented on drum set, percussion, mallet percussion, timpani, and Latin percussion, by the percussionists who developed the Broadway books! For high school, college, and professional percussionists, the NYU Broadway Percussion Seminar/Summit is a five-day intensive study of the skills, experience, and know-how of the world of Broadway percussion. Panel discussions will be held with leading percussionists, conductors, and contractors who are actively pursuing musical careers on Broadway. Participants will have the opportunity to attend two Broadway shows, and each individual will be able to sit in a live Broadway pit, during an actual Broadway show! They will also dine with the Broadway percussionists after a matinee performance. Throughout the week, you will have the opportunity to meet and work with several percussionists and contractors who are actively pursuing careers on Broadway. A typical session will cover a variety of topics, including an overview of the show and book, setup issues, use of technology and video monitors, artist background, subbing on Broadway, pay-scale for Broadway musicians, and many others. Artists will perform excerpts from their book, and hands-on participants will be sent a portion of a show to prepare and perform for the percussionists in a masterclass setting. Participants are typically sent four to six pieces from one show to prepare. The 2020 summer programs application open in mid-January.

NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar

Artful Timpani Auditioning Seminar

Course of Study: The Artful Timpani Auditioning Seminar is designed around applied auditioning skills for timpanists. It’s been formulated around the reality that auditioning is a vital skill set for all instrumental musicians, regardless of career path intention. Ambitious timpanists from the high school level up through seasoned professionals will necessarily find themselves in high pressure audition situations throughout their careers, whether for a youth orchestra, undergraduate conservatory, summer festival, graduate program, regional orchestra, or a full-time professional orchestra. This process places unique demands on timpanists as a subset of the broader percussion community, and we will leverage the singular locus of timpani-auditioning expertise afforded by NYU faculty and the extended New York City timpani community.
Program Description and Faculty: The centerpiece of this workshop is a multi-round mock-audition, with adjudication and detailed feedback provided after every round by timpanists of Lincoln Center, including Jason Haaheim (Director), co-principal timpanist, MET Orchestra; Parker Lee, co-principal timpanist, MET Orchestra; Steven White, assistant timpanist, MET Orchestra; Pablo Rieppi, New York City Ballet Orchestra. The mock audition will take place in Steinhardt’s Loewe Theatre. The audition will be blind for all rounds, with a screen setup in the audience to shield the players from view of the committee, and a second screen setup in the auditorium to provide an area where all participants can get to hear other players, keep their own notes, and compare them to the “official jury.” All audition rounds will be video- and audio-recorded, with attendees’ individual portions made available to them post-seminar. The mock audition will be preceded by masterclasses and presentations by the guest artists indicated above. Presentations will be crafted around themes of applied auditioning skills, while still including foundational and technical information. Attendees will be expected to perform in timpani excerpt masterclasses, with everyone receiving at least 30 minutes of masterclass time. With generous support from Adams, attendees will be playing on two sets of Adams Dresden Classic timpani. Attendees will be treated to a backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera, including a chance to play timpani in the pit and listen from the audience. Attendees will also get to attend an evening performance of the Mostly Mozart Festival, and meet principal timpanist David Punto.

Summer Percussion Seminar

Course of Study: The Juilliard School’s long-running Summer Percussion Seminar is a two-week percussion intensive designed specifically for advanced high school percussionists who have reached age 15 and not yet graduated from high school. Set in the exciting cultural environment of New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Seminar offers students hands-on instruction in orchestral, contemporary, and world music styles. Participants experience a challenging range of master classes, clinics, lectures, rehearsals, and performances led by a faculty of today’s most prominent percussion teachers and performers. The Seminar exposes students to the many skills, careers, and passions represented by Juilliard’s faculty and graduates and prepares them for success in college auditions and beyond. Students will watch and participate in masterclasses and clinics given by acclaimed faculty members and guests, perform with the JSPS Percussion Ensemble, participate in “Percussion Intensives,” mini courses that go in-depth on specific topics, take a Juilliard ear training course, attend full recitals by renowned faculty artists and Lincoln Center concerts, and learn a ton about music and percussion.

SōSI 2020: A Vision for New Work

Course of Study: The Sō Percussion Summer Institute (SōSI) is an intensive two-week chamber music seminar for percussionists and composers. The four members of Sō Percussion serve as faculty in rehearsal, performance, and discussion of contemporary music, art, aesthetics, and the practical issues involved in a performing arts career. The range of options available to creators in our immensely complex era is exhilarating, but also overwhelming. At SōSI 2020, tackle them together with friends and mentors who offer decades of experience in bringing new pieces of music to life. UW–Whitewater Percussion Camp
When: August 2–7
Course of Study: The six-day Summer Percussion Camp is designed for middle and high school students interested in enhancing their percussion skills. The staff will cover many styles of percussion with an emphasis on strong technical skills, and campers will be exposed to percussion ensemble playing. In addition, campers will have the opportunity to attend a variety of masterclasses, explore various percussion instruments, and perform in a percussion ensemble directed by camp staff members. The campers will also have the opportunity to socialize and use many of the university’s recreational facilities. Early registration is recommended as the camp size will be controlled to allow campers to receive significant instructional time. Graduating high school seniors are welcome. This camp is available to campers entering grades 5–12 in Fall 2019.
