PAS is proud to announce the 2022 recipients of its distinguished awards: Lifetime Achievement in Education, PAS President's Industry Award, Outstanding PAS Service Award, Outstanding PAS Supporter Award, and Outstanding PAS Chapter Award.

Lifetime Achivement in Education
The Percussive Arts Society Lifetime Achievement Award in Education was established in 2002 and recognizes the contributions of the most highly regarded leaders in percussion education.
Doug Howard
Douglas Howard is one of the leading orchestral percussionists of his generation. He was the Principal Percussionist and Associate Principal Timpanist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra for forty-three years, retiring in 2018, and also served as Interim Principal Timpanist during the orchestra’s 2009-10 season. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in 1970, Mr. Howard joined the United States Air Force Concert Band in Washington, DC, first as a percussionist, and later as the timpanist. Upon completion of military service in 1974, he was awarded a fellowship to study with Charles Owen at the Aspen Music Festival, and also was appointed Principal Percussionist of The Louisville Orchestra (KY). He began his work with the Dallas Symphony a year later, and has since performed as a guest percussionist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, the Charlotte Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, and the San Antonio Symphony. His work can be heard on Dallas Symphony recordings spanning four decades on several record labels including RCA, Angel-EMI, Telarc, Dorian, Delos, and Pro Arte.
Mr. Howard’s career as an educator began in 1977 when he joined the faculty of the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU. There he organized the school’s first percussion ensemble and headed the percussion program for 42 years. Mr. Howard was appointed in 1982 to the Artist Faculty at the Aspen Music Festival and School where he celebrated forty-one years of teaching and performing in 2022. At last count, students he has taught and mentored, either at the Aspen Festival or at SMU, currently hold positions in more than 30 major orchestras, opera companies, and military bands in the US, Mexico, Korea, and Israel. In addition, Mr. Howard has appeared on the faculty at the Oberlin Percussion Institute and the Ludwig International Percussion Symposium. He also has presented numerous orchestral masterclasses at institutions such as the Cleveland Institute of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Temple University, Oberlin College Conservatory, Ithaca College, Peabody Conservatory, University of North Texas, Baylor University, etc.
As a founding member of the Dallas based world-music ensemble, D’Drum, Mr. Howard has performed as a soloist in Stewart Copeland’s Gamelan D’Drum with the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the San Antonio Symphony. He also has performed with D’Drum at PASIC on three different occasions. In 2006, Mr. Howard received the Sabian Lifetime Achievement award at PASIC. He has presented clinics at PASIC on numerous occasions and is a former member of the PAS Board of Directors, The Dallas Symphony Board of Governors, and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Board of Directors. Mr. Howard now makes his home in Chapel Hill, NC.
Dane Maxim Richeson
The 2022-23 academic year marks Dane Maxim Richeson’s 39th year as Director of Percussion Studies at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin. Richeson received Lawrence University’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2015. The Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble (LUPÉ), directed by Richeson performed a Call For Tapes showcase concert at PASIC 1995. In addition, they won the 2014 PAS World Percussion Ensemble Competition and presented a spectacular performance of Ghanaian, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music at PASIC 2014. LUPÉ was recognized by the Wisconsin Music Educators Association, received a DOWNBEAT Outstanding Performance Award for Best Undergraduate Latin Music Group (2015), and released two CDs.
One of the most versatile performers in the percussive arts, Dane Richeson has performed around the world in varied roles including jazz drummer, world percussion specialist, solo percussionist/marimbist, and contemporary chamber ensemble percussionist — with such diverse artists as Bobby McFerrin, Joe Lovano, Roscoe Mitchell, Danilo Perez, Lyle Mays, NDR Big Band (Germany), Gunther Schuller, Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society (Madison, WI), Gordon Stout, Nancy Zeltsman, and the Fox Valley Symphony. He’s performed at the Ravinia Festival, as well as the North Sea, Quito and Montreux Jazz Festivals. Richeson has been a guest artist/teacher at the Central Conservatory Chamber Music Festival in Beijing, the Ivana Bilić Marimba/Percussion Week in Croatia, and several Zeltsman Marimba Festivals. His recordings include releases on Blue Note, Naxos, CRI, and Albany Records.
Growing up, Richeson recognized that 60s and 70s jazz was increasingly influenced by music from the Caribbean and Brazil. Between 1993-2010, he spent several sabbaticals rotating trips to study in Ghana, Cuba and Brazil, for a total of two trips to each location, and several months spent in each country. Richeson subsequently incorporated these performance techniques to develop a unique conservatory training, including ensemble and vocal traditions of each country as well as Ghanaian dance traditions, that profoundly influenced his students — who will share this broad world view with generations to come.
Anthony Robinson
Anthony Robinson currently serves as the percussion instructor at East Texas Baptist University of Marshall, in Marshall, TX, and has been there since 1991.
An active professional, Mr. Robinson is currently in his 44th season as percussionist with Louisiana’s oldest Symphony Orchestra, The Shreveport Symphony and twenty-six years with the Longview and Marshall Symphonies. Mr. Robinson is also a recent retiree from the United States Air Force where he served as First Sergeant/Principal Percussionist for the United States Army Air Force Band of the Gulf Coast (ANG).
His military musical experience includes a ten-city tour of the Czech Republic; teaching private lessons as a form of Welfare and Recreation to U.S. troops while he was deployed to south west Asia in support of the Global War on Terrorism and appearances with the U.S. Air Force Band of the West (San Antonio) showcasing the music of David Holsinger, Alfred Reed and Frank Tichelli (Heritage Series concerts).
Mr. Robinson received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern State University of Natchitoches, Louisiana and his graduate degree from East Texas University (now Texas A & M at Commerce). His percussion instructors were the late Dr. John Raush, Mr. Eddie Kozak of Kozak Music Studio, the late Milt Jackson and Don Keipp.
Mr. Robinson has 30 years of service with the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) as a Percussion Organizer for the Texas All State Bands and Orchestras. His last year to serve in that capacity was during the February 2022 convention in San Antonio.

The PAS President’s Industry Award was established to recognize those individuals in the Percussion Industry that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their field and outstanding support of the Society.
Chris Hart

Chris Hart’s journey in the musical instrument manufacturing industry began in 1986 as a Distribution Clerk working for Simmons Electronic Drums. In 1992 he was hired at Remo, Inc. as a Data Entry Clerk where he quickly excelled and ascended in positions, in his 30-year tenure with Remo, Inc., he has held numerous positions including Director of Artists & Public Relations Worldwide and currently as Manager of Communications & Relationships Worldwide, the core of his success has been due to his hard work, dedication, character, and passion.
Chris Hart’s skills and experience in Artist/Public Relations, Marketing and Promotions have given him the ability to work with many of the top drummers/percussionist throughout the world, in television shows, concerts, recordings, movies, livestreams, music festivals and music award shows, including The American Music Awards and The Grammy Awards.
Chris has received many accolades from musicians and high-level music executivesin the industry for his commitment, dedication, and his desire to complete projects. The 20th Anniversary Person of the Year Award from the Musicians in Action Organization is an award he treasures dearly. The award was presented to him for his tireless work and devotion to help the youth and adults in the communities of South Los Angeles and Inglewood to learn how to play and to inspire them to achieve their dream of becoming better drummers & percussionist.
Chris Hart was born and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, California, his humble beginnings are the root of his drive for success, for achieving his goals and giving back to his community.
Chris holds a degree in Liberal Arts with a minor in Marketing from California State University, Los Angeles.
Outstanding PAS Service Award
The Outstanding PAS Service Award was established to recognize an individual each year who has provided service to the organization through a significant project, cause or cumulative service that has made a significant contribution to the Society as a whole.
Sherry Rubins
Sherry Rubins is Professor of Practice and coordinator of the percussion program at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Mrs. Rubins directs the percussion and steel drum ensembles and teaches undergraduate and graduate percussion majors. Sherry is Principal Timpanist and Personnel Manager with the Mid Texas Symphony , and Principal Timpanist with Victoria Bach Festival (TX) and the Mozart Texas Festival orchestras. In the past she held the position of Acting Assistant Principal Timpanist/Percussionist with the San Antonio Symphony. Sherry frequently performed as a substitute musician with the San Antonio Symphony for over 35 years. She now performs regularly with and contracts for, the newly formed San Antonio Philharmonic. She has presented clinics and performances throughout the south Texas area, as well as the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), the Texas Bandmasters Association Conventions, and the Music for All Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival (2019). In 2016 Sherry presented a session at the first annual Women’s Band Director Symposium in Birmingham Alabama. Mrs. Rubins has taught at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Stephen F. Austin Percussion Symposium.
Sherry is a former member of the Board of Advisors for the Percussive Arts Society and she participated on the Health and Wellness committee for many years. At PASIC 2017 she co-presented a health and wellness session with Andy Harnsberger “Optimize Your Performance through Exercise and Nutrition”. For many years Sherry also presented free early morning fitness sessions during PASIC. She was vice-president of the Texas PAS Chapter from 1991 to 2002 and she co-presented the Keyboard Fundamentals session at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) 2012 in Austin and again in Indianapolis in November 2017. The UTSA Percussion Ensemble also performed with Robert Chappell during PASIC 2015 and will perform at TMEA in February of 2023. She has hosted and participated in numerous PAS Days of Percussion at UTSA and around the state of Texas. Sherry has been a member of the Percussive Arts Society since 1978 when as a sophomore in college, she participated in the 50-piece marimba orchestra at PASIC in Tempe, Arizona.
Sherry is an artist/educational clinician for Zildjian Cymbals, Remo Percussion, the Yamaha Corporation, and the Vic Firth Company.
Outstanding PAS Supporter Award
The Outstanding Supporter Award was established to recognize an individual each year who has significantly promoted the Society through their professional and educational activities to increase visibility and awareness of the Society.
Dom Famularo
His sensational drumming and brilliant communication skills have earned Dom Famularo a reputation of being the world’s leading motivational drum set artist/educator. Through history-making tours of China and the Far East, and with standing ovations to capacity audiences at virtually every major drumming event in Europe and the Americas, this vibrant performer from Long Island, New York, is renowned for delivering entertaining and awe-inspiring performances unlike any other.
Tutored by legendary greats Jim Chapin, Al Miller and Joe Morello, Dom combines the masterful techniques of the past with the parameter-pushing concepts of the 21st Century, for a highly creative and uniquely personal style of drumming. With hands powered by the famous Moeller technique and feet dancing through high-speed double-pedal bass drumming patterns he delivers performances that dip and dive through dynamics and styles with energy and ease. Elements of Rock, Jazz, Funk, Fusion and World permeate his sound, while every stroke speaks to the inventiveness that makes his drumming so exciting, entertaining and inspiring.

Outstanding PAS Chapter Award
The PAS Outstanding Chapter Award recognizes individual chapters who have increased membership and provided percussion events, newsletters, and experiences that are beneficial for the continued music education of all chapter members.
