INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) announces the creation of the new PAS Solo Artist Competition. The only one of its kind in the U.S., the PAS Solo Artist Competition will happen every year, with the instrument category alternating between Drum Set and Solo Percussion.

The first year of the PAS Solo Artist Competition begins with the Drum Set category. Applications will be accepted through November 2019, with final live rounds taking place June 17-19, 2020. Entrants must be 18 - 30 years old, PAS membership is not required, and there is no entry fee.

“Our goal is to find and support the best emerging artists in the field of percussion. That’s why we created this competition with as few barriers as possible.”  - Joshua Simonds, PAS Executive Director

In the preliminary round of the 2020 Competition, Drum Set competitors will submit 3-10 minute individual videos in any genre. The top ten artists will be invited to perform in the live final rounds on June 17-19, 2020 in Nashville, TN. During semi-finals, each of the top ten will perform a piece with track, a solo, and a piece with a live band. The field will then be narrowed to three, who will be judged by world-renowned drum set artists and educators as they perform a live solo and a 30-minute set with a band in the final round of the Competition.

PAS Solo Artist Competition finalists will receive the following cash prizes: First Place $10,000, Second Place $5,000, and Third Place $2,500; along with performance opportunities and introductions to leading industry and education professionals. The winner will perform either a Drum Set Clinic/Performance or a Solo Percussion Showcase at that year’s Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). The 2020 Competition winner will perform during PASIC 2020 in Indianapolis, IN from Nov 11-14, 2020.

“It is exciting that PAS, a world-class organization, is providing an opportunity like this for emerging artists to develop in the drum and percussion field.” -Steve Smith
